From San Gimignano, take the highway to Siena, exit Siena Sud and follow the signs to Buonconvento, before Buonconvento turn right to Montalcino.

 Montalcino is located on a hill in Val d'Orcia, and it is famous for the production of Brunello wine, Montalcino stands on hill, it is believed to have been inhabited already in Etruscan age. In the highest point of the town, in 1361, was built, the pentagonal fortress. Its territory is covered with vineyards and olive trees. At about 10 km from Montalcino, you can visit the castle of Banfi, where you can taste wine and visit the cellars. Then continue to Sant'Antimo, a beautiful Romanesque abbey, located near Castelnuovo dell’Abate. According to the legend, Charles Magne, in 781, returning from Rome, was walking the Francigena way with his army, a lot of them were infected by the plague and to stop it, the emperor made a vow and founded the Abbey. Then you can visit Bagno Vignoni, a small medieval village on hill, it is famous for its thermal water, dating back the Roman times. The houses and the church of S. Giovanni Battista are developed around tub, from which flows out hot water. On return you can stop in San Quirico D’Orcia, medieval village, it is famous for the Romanesque Church, with decorations of great artistic and the Orti  Leonini
